Description
A striking example of 19th-century Gothic Revival craftsmanship, this rare architectural cassette (decorative casket) embodies the medieval revival that captivated Europe during the Victorian era. Constructed with a wooden core clad in finely cast bronze fittings, the casket is crowned by an elaborate pierced Gothic cresting above a graceful domed lid. Delicate foliate ornament, trefoil-inspired motifs, clustered column supports, and lion-paw feet create the appearance of a miniature Gothic reliquary or cathedral chest.
Originally intended for the safekeeping of treasured possessions, important documents, jewelry, or personal correspondence, the casket retains its iron-lined interior with traces of its original blue textile lining, preserving the character and authenticity of the piece. The original locking mechanism remains present, further reflecting its historical purpose as both a secure repository and an object of exceptional beauty.
